LIFE EDUCATION’S ‘CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY’ AWARD PRESENTED TO VEDRAN DRAKULIC OAM

In its second year, the 2017 Life Education Richard Williams OAM – Contribution to Community Award winner has gone to philanthropist Vedran Drakulic OAM.

With more than 15 years’ experience in the not for profit sector, Vedran has played a pivotal role in a suite of humanitarian and altruistic programs and pursuits including the Red Cross, Oxfam Australia and most recently, as CEO of Gandel Philanthropy.

Gandel Philanthropy is particularly interested in health and wellbeing of our future generations so supporting Life Education to deliver their core school programs has been a natural fit.

Gandel Philanthropy provided several grants to Life Education in the past five years, including funding for one of their Mobile Learning Centres for programs in the western suburbs of Melbourne, as well as funding to revise and update their core materials for primary and middle school programs and activities.

In 2015, Vedran participated in the Ocsober campaign, to highlight the work of Life Education and the importance of good health education very early on. Vedran raised over $11 k for the appeal, which included a matching grant from Gandel Philanthropy.

According to Vedran, receiving the 'contribution to community award' from LE Victoria was a complete surprise.

“It was also very humbling, but inspiring as well. I don't do what I do for awards, but at the same time, I hope this award can motivate others to decide to get involved and volunteer, or support Life Education in their vital work,” he said.

“Life Education plays a critical role in teaching our younger generations about healthy choices in their future life. The biggest drawcard is that their work is preventative in nature.  Research clearly shows that it is far cheaper for society to invest in prevention programs, rather than dealing with, and funding, remediation at a later stage. Of course, Healthy Harold is an iconic character and he will hopefully continue to inform our children about healthy living for years to come.”

According to Andrew Bennetto, CEO, Life Education Victoria and Tasmania, Vedran and Gandel Philanthropy have both played important roles in helping to spread the Life Education message and its programs.

“Through the generosity of Gandel Philanthropy and Vedran’s tireless work, Life Education can continue to ensure that more Victorian and Tasmanian children experience our powerful programs from our educators in our interactive mobile classrooms,” he said.

“Through Life Education, we want all Victorian kids to be able to make safer and healthier choices for their lives.”
